Chamarel’s Rainbow Dunes were reportedly discovered in 1879 by a member of the Royal Society of Mauritius. Hence, the settlement of Chamarel in southwest Mauritius is named after the son of a member of the High Council. This Mauritian landmark has been known since the beginning of tourism in the 1960s. It’s amazing how the spectacular natural phenomenon in the Chamarel region of the Heihe district has evolved over thousands of years to form volcanic lava dunes with iridescent sand, clad in layers of minerals. While you’re here, trace the unique features of Mauritius arising from large-scale geological events such as continental collisions or volcanic eruptions.
Due to the tropical climate, water-soluble components such as silica are washed away from the sand, leaving behind the brilliant natural colors created by iron oxides ranging from red to brown and blue to purple. Mineral composition and cooling temperature in multiple colors is one of the other colors. Interestingly, when the colored sands are mixed together, formations appear, each of which is attracted to other sands of the same color.
