The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) stated that 12 staff and one volunteer from the Chicago Marine Leadership Institute have been removed after investigations into alleged improper adult relationships with students.
According to CPS chief executive Pedro Martinez (Pedro Martinez), some of the people who were removed were allegedly involved in these relationships. He said that others were accused of participating in so-called cover-ups.

Martinez said one of the respondents allegedly had sex with a student. He said another person was accused of sexually harassing and retaliating against a student, while the other allegation involved an employee providing training to a student. Martinez said that in addition to these allegations, six people under investigation allegedly did not report suspected violations.
Martinez said that as of Friday, three of them were still under investigation for suspected “improper personal relationships with students.”
He said: “I want to make it clear that not reporting misconduct is shocking and violates school district policy.”

The district encourages students to speak up and take steps to report suspected misconduct by contacting the Office of Student Protection.
Martinez said the school district plans to share the findings with the Illinois Board of Education (ISBE). He added that the school district will require the state committee to revoke the employee’s license.
