Vice President Kamala Harris said on Friday Kyle RittenhouseThe acquittal proved that the criminal justice system needs to be reformed to be more “fair.”
“The verdict is really self-evident,” Harris told reporters. “As many of you know, I have spent most of my career working on making the criminal justice system fairer, and there is clearly a lot of work to be done.”
In August last year, during the riots in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Rittenhouse shot and killed three people. After killing two people, he was found not guilty. He was arrested on August 26, 2020 andHe was initially charged with first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide, first-degree intentional and reckless homicide, failure to comply with emergency orders of the local government, and possession of dangerous weapons.
Although the prosecution tried to portray Rittenhouse as a “want to be a soldier” who went to Kenosha to find trouble, Rittenhouse’s lawyers argued that his actions were in self-defense.
President Biden expressed disappointment at the verdict on Friday, but he encouraged Americans to accept the jury’s decision.
Biden said in a statement: “Although the Kenosha verdict will make many Americans, including me, angry and worried, we must admit that the jury has spoken.” The promise of being together, because I believe that what unites us is far greater than what divides us. I know we will not heal the wounds of our country overnight, but I am unswervingly committed to doing everything I can to ensure that every Americans are treated equally, fairly and with dignity under the law.
He added: “I urge everyone to express their views peacefully in accordance with the rule of law.” “Violence and property destruction have no place in our democracy.”
