China-Laos railway becomes a busy passenger and freight link


The operator, the China-Laos Railway Company, said the China-Laos railway, which opened in December last year, has seen significant growth in both passenger and freight traffic.

In the five months since the opening of the international railway corridor between the southern Chinese city of Kunming and the Lao capital Vientiane, as of May 3, 2.7 million passengers and 2.9 million tons of cargo have been completed.

The line transported 1.1 million tonnes of cargo between April 4 and May 3 alone, more than five times the volume in the first month following the opening of seven new cargo terminals between Vientiane and the northern border of Laos.

The Chinese rail section handled nearly 2.39 million passengers, while the Laos section carried 312,000 passengers, the operator said.

Commodities, fertilizers and electronics as cargo

Most of the goods transported by rail are bulk commodities such as iron ore and rubber, as well as fertilizers, electronic products, automobiles, flowers, etc. The produce is scheduled to start shipping in July this year.

The line has shipped goods to more than ten countries including Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Singapore. Cross-border e-commerce goods are increasingly transported by rail, mainly from the Kunming Free Trade Zone in southern China.

Cheaper connections for Lao commuters

In terms of passenger transport, the Laos segment provides cheaper and slower services to meet the diverse needs of passengers. Regular trains will serve commuters between Vientiane and the northern Laos border city of Boding at speeds of 120 kilometers per hour.

However, travelers can also take high-speed trains between the two cities at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour for slightly higher fares.

At present, Laos operates 8 bullet trains and 2 ordinary trains every day, and the China section operates 36 high-speed trains. In both countries, more trains run on holidays.

The China-Laos railway is a project under China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative and part of Laos’ strategy to transform from a landlocked country to an overland destination.
