The ruling Communist Party is facing increasing calls from tennis stars and the sport’s professional circuit to prove that Peng, a three-time Olympian and former No. 1 women’s doubles player, is safe and allows her to speak freely.

At the same time, the editor of a newspaper published by the party stated that Peng would soon “appear in public”.

As the Chinese capital prepares to host the Winter Olympics in February, the controversy is politically embarrassing. A spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied on Friday the outcry of knowing Peng’s disappearance.

The 35-year-old Peng made a statement on social media this month, accusing Zhang Gaoli, a former member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, of forcing her to have sex with her repeated refusal. She has not appeared in public since.

The editor of the Global Times, an English-language newspaper published by the Chinese Communist Party, said on Twitter that he had confirmed from unknown sources that these photos “are indeed Peng Shuai’s current state.”

“In the past few days, she is at ease in her own home and does not want to be disturbed,” the editor-in-chief Hu Xijin wrote. “She will soon appear in front of the public and participate in some activities.”

The photo shows that Peng, a gray cat and a panda figurine, appear to be in a private residence, with plush toys lined up behind her. There is no indication of when the photo was taken.

Steve Simon, president and CEO of the Women’s Tennis Association, reacted to a video on Saturday that claimed to be showing tennis players in a restaurant.

“I am very happy to see the video released by the Chinese state media, which seems to be Peng Shuai’s restaurant in Beijing. Although seeing her is positive, it is not clear if she is free and can be free from coercion or external interference. Make your own decisions and take action. This video alone is not enough,” Simon said.

“As I said from the beginning, I still worry about Peng Shuai’s health and safety. Allegations of sexual assault are being reviewed and covered up. I know exactly what needs to happen. Our relationship with China is at a crossroads.”
