Ingredients and Substitutions
This section explains how to choose the best Christmas charcuterie board ingredients, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements see Recipe card below.
- Christmas stars – To make the tree the star, I used a whole wheel of brie stuffed with pomegranate seeds. If you want something sweeter, chocolate chips or jam are great options.
- cheese – I added sharp cheddar cheese slices and white cheddar cheese slices to the board. You can choose other types of cheese such as pepper jack cheese, Colby Jack cheese, goat cheese, mozzarella cheese balls or any hard and soft cheese you like.
- cookie – These form the stump.I used These gluten free cookiesbut you can use whatever you like, or homemade cheese biscuits or Flaxseed Cookies.
- olives – To inject some spicy flavor and a pop of color, I added pimento olives, but you can choose green, black, or kalamata olives. If you don’t like olives, cherry tomatoes are also good.
- Pickle – Mini dill pickles bring a savory kick.
- meat – I used salami and ham, but you can use turkey slices, ham, pepperoni, or any deli meat you like.If you don’t like sliced meat, you can make chicken liver pate. You can also skip the meat and make it directly into a cheese board.
- fruit – You will need apples, kiwis, red or green grapes. Strawberries, citrus slices, or pear slices would also work.
- nut – I used a combination of pecans, pistachios, and cashews for this holiday charcuterie board, but almonds, walnuts, or any nut would work.
- fresh herbs – Use fresh rosemary sprigs or thyme sprigs for a fragrant and decorative touch.
