This week is my first week away from Instagram. I have taken breaks before, most recently during the winter break for two weeks. For some reason, this time it feels different. Maybe it’s because I know I’m getting ready to leave forever. Every time I take a break from Instagram, I find myself discovering new things about myself and how the app affects my own behavior. I’ve been jotting down my thoughts so I can share them appropriately when I’m ready, but one thing that popped into my head this week is my reaction to tragedy.
When the shooting happened in Chicago on the 4th of July, my gut reaction was to share something about it on Instagram and see what other people were saying. Wow. Why do I need people on Instagram to know how upset I am about this? I can assume that most of the people who know me know all too well how I feel about gun violence and gun reform. I have had a lot of personal conversations about it. Most people know my position on abortion and many other political and social issues. But most people can’t see what I’m doing offline And how I get involved in civic and political activism when I’m not on social media.
Discussing these issues on social media is important, but they are not the end. This week’s links include an article about How to be an activist outside of social media. There are a lot of nuances to how I personally feel about this, especially since I don’t think it’s an excuse for influencers and people with big platforms to have a “light, love, and good vibe” approach. But that’s the problem with social media, there isn’t much room for nuance.
More to come. I wish you a nice weekend.
