Comments on “Italian Grammar – Concise and Concise” – My Italian Circle’s Handbook of Italian Grammar

There are many ways to learn a new language, but reading or at least referring to a good grammar book is an excellent way to grasp some of the more challenging concepts a language can pose.

That said, the complexity of some material can be objectionable, not only hindering the reader’s ability to understand grammar rules, but also impairing rather than enhancing their confidence.

That’s why we love my italian circle“manual”Italian grammar – concise and clear‘. Unlike many other Italian grammar books, it does an excellent job of clearly explaining the complex grammar rules and principles that form the basis of Italian, without the verbosity of other sources or too many unnecessary references to technical grammar terms.as an author Ana del Franco and Diana Lavarini Describe yourself in the introduction:

At 148 pages long, this book is easy to understand, large and easy to read, covering all the most important parts of speech, presented in the standard order in the Italian grammar guide. Each section contains numerous example sentences, allowing the reader to see the grammar used in context. The layout is also attractive – kudos to the graphic designer!

Overall, I found Anna easy to follow due to her impeccable ability to explain and simplify even the most difficult concepts. Whenever a grammar term is mentioned, it’s always well explained, and if you find yourself in need of a refresher, you can always turn to the helpful grammar glossary above.

Throughout the book you will find additional details, exceptions and warnings shared in red text boxes, as well as personal tips and helpful links from the author YouTube video on their green channel.

I highly recommend checking out these videos as Anna discusses some of the topics in more depth and listening to her explain them out loud reinforces the concepts you learn in the book. Here’s an example from one of their most popular grammar videos:

I also appreciate how Anna points out many common mistakes English learners make.For example, in noun section, she explains how people (people) is always singular in Italian, not plural in English. You really told how knowledgeable Anna is, not only Italian but also English grammar, and the book was conceived with the various strengths and weaknesses of English learners in mind.

My only criticism of the book is the lack of English translation of some Italian example sentences. Intermediate learners may not have any difficulty understanding the meaning, but beginners will definitely have difficulty. Perhaps this was an oversight, or a conscious choice made to keep the book as concise as possible.

Either way, in future releases, it would be great to see all phrases translated for the benefit of those who are just beginning their language learning journey.
