The author of the report pointed out that, overall, there is competition between cities for the top few, but overall the top cities are still somewhat stable. Overall, cities in the Asia-Pacific region performed best, and cities in the Middle East scored the worst.

The report pointed out that the Covid-19 pandemic has “changed the entire concept of urban security” and that as companies increasingly turn to the Internet, digital security has become more important. The report said: “The increase in the level of work from home, the increase in digitization of business, and the growing demand from residents for more sustainable urban communities that provide services within walking or cycling distances have had a wide-ranging impact on infrastructure,” it added. The environmental safety pillar added this year has had a major impact on the overall ranking. Wellington, New Zealand ranks first in this category, but ranks 7th overall. The environmental safety pillar considers the city’s sustainable development master plan, green economy initiatives, waste management and air quality levels.

The EIU report stated that there is a strong correlation between income and urban safety, and the top 29 cities are high-income countries.

Yangon, the financial center of Myanmar, is the most insecure place in the index, ranking 60th, with Karachi, Caracas, Cairo and Lagos also ranking the bottom five.
