Local authorities said on Sunday that Costa Rican police seized 4.3 tons of cocaine originating in Colombia on Sunday. This is the second largest drug case in the history of the Central American country and the largest drug case this year.

In recent years, the major cocaine depression has raised concerns that Costa Rica has become an important transit country for Colombian drugs to Europe, which worries officials in one of the most stable countries in Central America.

Costa Rica’s Ministry of Security said that the cocaine was shipped in a container with a tiled floor. The merchant ship arrived at Puerto Moin in Costa Rica from a turbo port in the Caribbean Sea in Colombia.

“The marijuana and cocaine we seized in the country are very close to 40 tons (as of 2021). We hope to exceed last year’s figures,” Security Minister Michael Soto said in a statement.

According to data from the Ministry of Security, Costa Rican authorities seized nearly 57 tons of cocaine in 2020, an increase of 56% year-on-year. They seized 14.5 tons of cannabis last year.
