As a major Chinese city battled devastating floods, hundreds of people were trapped in water-filled subway cars.

A woman wrote on the social media site Weibo, According to the BBC: “I can’t speak anymore. If there is no rescue within 20 minutes, we will lose hundreds of lives.”

Another person who was rescued wrote on social media, According to Reuters: “Water reached my chest. I am really scared, but the most terrifying thing is not the water, but the decreasing air supply in the carriage.

According to the BBC, rescuers were able to pull them out after they were trapped for hours.

Tens of thousands of people were evacuated due to the flood, and at least 33 people died. According to Reuters. Zhengzhou has a population of approximately 12 million.
