Easy Creamed Spinach Topping
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for the best creamed spinach recipes, what each ingredient does, and substitution options. For measurements, see Recipe card below.
- butter – I prefer grass-fed butter, but any unsalted butter will do.
- garlic – freshly chopped for best flavor, or use canned minced garlic.
- baby spinach – Any fresh spinach will do, but baby spinach leaves will have a milder flavor and be more bitter than mature spinach.
- heavy cream – Makes up the bulk of the sauce while remaining creamy and easy to whip. Coconut cream can be used as a substitute.
- cream cheese – Helps thicken creamy sauces. Cut into small pieces and let it come to room temperature to mix with the vegetables.
- Italian seasoning – I prefer to do my own Italian seasoning (Just a few minutes!), but you can also buy store-bought combos.
- sea salt and black pepper
- parmesan cheese – This is optional but adds another delicious topping. Grate it fresh for the best flavor.
Variation: add peppers or onions!
You can sauté the diced onion before adding the spinach, or add a little chili at the end if you like it hot.

How to Make Creamed Spinach with Cream Cheese
This section describes how to make creamed spinach, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique to help you visualize it.For complete instructions, including quantities and temperatures, see Recipe card below.
- saute. Melt butter in a large pan with high sides (I used this). Add garlic and saute until fragrant.
- withered. Add spinach and sauté until almost wilted. If you have more spinach than the pot holds, cover to let it wilt before stirring and adding more.

- mix. Add cream, cream cheese, salt, pepper and Italian seasoning.
- chef. Continue to cook until the sauce thickens. Garnish with Parmesan cheese (if using) before serving.

How to make Creamed Spinach from Frozen?
Replace 10 ounces of fresh spinach with 10 ounces of frozen spinach. Thaw and drain first, then squeeze to remove as much water as possible. After that, the saute time will be shorter after adding the spinach, but the same time after adding the cream.
Is Creamed Spinach Keto? healthy?
Yes, the natural ingredients and low carb in this creamed spinach recipe make it a healthy and keto dish in my book, but it’s definitely not low fat if you’re looking for it. Unlike versions that rely on high-carb thickeners like flour or cornstarch, creamed spinach with cream cheese thickens simply by simmering heavy cream.Cream cheese also acts as a thickener and natural cornstarch substitute.
Storage Instructions
- Shop: Store creamed spinach in a covered container for up to 5 days. It loses some of its bright color over time, so try to enjoy it early.
- Meal preparation: Make it 1-2 days in advance and store in the refrigerator.
- Reheat: Heat in a saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally.
- freeze: I do not recommend freezing as the sauce may separate and become watery, but you can still safely freeze this dish for up to 4 months. Cover tightly and store in a freezer container. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
