Cressida Dick: Sarah Everard’s murderer “betrayed” a police colleague

This morning, the commissioner who pleaded guilty heard a conversation with Ms. Everard’s family in the courtroom.

“I was able to talk to them earlier today, and I once again apologize for their loss and their pain and suffering.

“Everyone in our metropolis feels disgusted, angry, and sad about this man’s crimes. They are terrible. Everyone in the police feels betrayed.”

Couzens kidnapped Ms. Everard on March 3, when she went home through South London and took her to the coast of Kent in a rented car.

He transferred the 33-year-old marketing executive to his car and raped and murdered her sometime before her body was found in Kent Woodland on March 10.

Couzens provided the police with a series of lies about the kidnapping, claiming that he was under pressure from Eastern European gangs and implying that he was not involved in the murder.

But he confessed to kidnapping and rape last month, and today he confessed to murder in court.

To pay tribute to Ms. Everard, Mrs. Cressida said: “Sarah is an amazing and talented young woman who has been waiting for her all her life, and this has been taken away.

“She is loved so much and many people will miss her very much.

“Since Sarah disappeared, the only priority of my investigative team, search team, and hundreds of people in Metropolis and other areas is to find Sarah and bring to justice those who committed these terrible crimes, just like we It may be as fast as possible.

“In this regard, we are very grateful to Sara’s family, her friends and many members of the public, who helped the investigation in various ways, especially through appeals and providing us with information.

“There are no words that can fully express the deep sadness, anger, and regret of everyone in my Metropolitan Police Department over what happened to Sarah.

“Today, like every other day, our thoughts are with Sarah, her family and her loved ones, and they will always be like this.”

The senior police officer did not name Couzens in her statement and did not stop to answer questions from reporters outside Old Bailey.

Jamie Klingler, one of the founders of the “Recycle These Streets” campaign launched after the death of Ms. Everard today called on the government to take more measures to protect the safety of women.

“We have had enough, and we want to see real change,” she said. “We hope the government will make it a major issue.”

The chief investigator of Scotland Yard’s murder investigation had to apologize to the court early in the proceedings after the Met issued a press release, revealing that Ms. Everard had been strangled to death.

Prosecutor Tom Little QC said: “This was done before the lawyers, the court and the defense considered the materials”, and Judge Fulford called the incident “unwelcome”.

It is investigating how Couzens was suspected of being molested three days before the kidnapping, but continued to work for the army and carry guns.

Justice Fulford stated that he will consider letting Couzens serve for life when he is sentencing in September.
