Crisis in Afghanistan: Kabul Airport Scene “Shames Western Politics”——German President

BERLIN-The German President criticized the chaotic scenes of Western powers at Kabul Airport on Tuesday, where thousands of Afghans gathered to flee the country after the Taliban regained power.

“The desperate picture of Kabul Airport is shameful to Western politics,” Frank-Waltersteinmeier said, calling the situation in Afghanistan “a human tragedy that we share together.”

Steinmeier, the former foreign minister, said that Germany has a responsibility “to make every effort to make our people and all Afghans who have stood by their side safe for many years.”

He said it must also help people in danger in Afghanistan, including “many brave women.”

He said: “Years of failed efforts to establish a stable and viable society in Afghanistan have caused fundamental problems in the past and future of our foreign policy and military engagement.”

As part of the US-led NATO operation, German troops have been deployed in Afghanistan for nearly 20 years.

Over the years, Germany has sent 150,000 men and women to different locations, making it the second largest NATO contributor after the United States.

After Washington decided to leave Germany, Germany withdrew its last troops at the end of June.
