Anchester UnitedBring in them Cristiano Ronaldo Back at Old Trafford, the club announced a set of financial reports today.
Data for the first quarter of the 2021-22 fiscal year shows that compared with the same period last year, “employee benefits costs” have increased by £16.6 million.
Ronaldo is Manchester United’s largest income earner. He signed a two-year contract, which is believed to be worth £480,000 per week.
The increase in wages was offset by £17.4 million from player sales, mainly Dan James’ transfer to Leeds United, although the club also received transfer fees from Romelu Lukaku’s transfer from Inter Milan to Chelsea.
Overall, total revenue increased by 16.1% to 126.5 million pounds. This was largely due to the significant increase in match-day revenue brought about by fans returning to the game after the coronavirus restrictions were lifted.
Revenue on the match day was 18.8 million pounds, compared to only 1.7 million pounds when the game was closed the previous year.
Compared with 2020-21, this increase helped reduce operating losses from 27.1 million pounds to 10.2 million pounds.
Commercial revenue increased by 7.9% to 64.4 million pounds. This is partly due to Ronaldo’s arrival, although the Portuguese did not return to the club until the last month of the season.
On September 30, the club’s net debt was 439.7 million pounds, slightly lower than the 440.6 million pounds the year before.
With the club behind Chelsea by 9 points, coach Solskjaer is under increasing pressure and needs to reverse the situation on the court.
Manchester United Executive Vice President Ed Woodward said: “Although these financial results today prove our resilience in the pandemic, our first priority is to succeed on the pitch.
“The manager, the players and everyone in the club are determined to achieve this goal.”
