This time, I decided to change my usual method of dicing bone-in chicken (compound cream Subcutaneous) and chose a sweet and savory Honey Garlic flavor.

Ingredients and Substitutions

- chicken – This crockpot chicken thighs recipe uses bone-in chicken thighs, which are flavorful and crispy on the outside, but you can also make them with boneless skinless chicken thighs or even chicken breasts.
- spices and herbs – Rub both sides of the chicken with the following composition chili, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, sea salt and black pepper. Feel free to use other dried herbs and spices of your choice.
- olive oil – Used to sear the skin of chicken thighs before cooking them in the pan. You can also use avocado oil or other neutral heat-resistant oil.
- coconut amino acids – This is my all time favorite soy sauce substitutesbut regular or low-sodium soy sauce will work too.
- Honey – I prefer sugar free honeybut you can use regular honey if you prefer.
How to Make Chicken Thighs in a Pan

- Mix spices. In a small bowl, combine chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, sea salt, and black pepper.
- Season the chicken. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Rub both sides with spice mixture.
- Fry until crispy. in a big cast iron skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Fry the chicken skin side down until the skin is crispy. (I flipped it in the image below to show how it looks, but you don’t have to.)
Tip: You can skip the searing step if you want, but I don’t recommend it.
A quick roast and the skin becomes crispy and delicious! But if you’re in a hurry, you can add the chicken right into the slow cooker right away.
- Transfer and add honey mixture. Put the chicken legs in slow cooker, skin side up. Stir the honey and coconut aminos in a small bowl and pour the mixture over the chicken.
- Simmer. Cover the pot and cook the chicken legs until tender.
How long does it take to cook chicken drumsticks in a pot?
The typical cooking time for slow cooker chicken legs is 4 to 5 hours on low and 2 to 2.5 hours on high. For best results, the internal temperature of the chicken should be at least 170 degrees Fahrenheit – this is the optimal temperature for dark meat to make it juicy.
Tip: If you want, you can use the juices from the slow cooker to make honey garlic sauce!
Just stir in a tablespoon of cornstarch, or your favorite Cornstarch Substitutes (Amount required may vary) Pour into the liquid in the bottom of the slow cooker.
Storage instructions
- Shop: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
- Meal Preparation: You can mix the spice and sauce mixture ahead of time and store in separate containers until ready. You can also cook the chicken ahead of time and place it in meal prep containers with your favorite side dishes for an easy, healthy lunch.
- Reheat: You can reheat Crock Pot chicken thighs in the microwave, but for crispier results, it’s best to reheat the dish in a 350-degree Fahrenheit oven or in a hot skillet on the stovetop. You can also heat using the “warm” setting on your slow cooker.
- Freeze: Place in an airtight container or zip-top bag and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.
