Vashon Island’s Mukai Farm & Garden will host its third Haiku Festival in March, bringing the beauty of haiku in the style of ancient Japanese poetry to Vashon Islanders. The festival attracts hundreds of entrants and fans from multiple countries every year.
The Haiku Festival is a poetry jury competition for all ages. Awards are in the Heritage, Social Justice, Nature, Reflection, People’s Choice and Young Poets categories.
Limit three persons per person. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $5, available online.
Mukai will print and present the poetry anthology on the grounds at 18017 107th Ave. SW, Vashon, WA. Personal calligraphy works will be displayed throughout the property at Mukai Farm and Gardens.
Mukai Farm & Garden will also celebrate a one-of-a-kind event: a Japanese tea ceremony at noon on April 10 to commemorate Masa Mukai’s 112th birthday and honor the winner of a haiku competition. Winners will be introduced to the public and receive a thank you gift for their inspiring and imaginative poetry. The venue will be open for tours, with open houses for poetry in the exhibit.
Registration deadline is April 1. Submit poetry online: mukaifarmandgarden.org/haiku-2022.
