everything you need to know

Crawling and indexing a website is the first step in the complex process of understanding the content of web pages in order to present them as answers to user queries.

Search engines are constantly improving the way they crawl and index websites.

Understanding how Google and Bing handle the task of crawling and indexing your site can help you develop strategies to improve search visibility.

How Search Engines Work Today: Indexing

Let’s look at the specifics of how search engines work.

This article focuses on indexes. So, let’s dive in…

index

Indexing is where the ranking process begins after a website is crawled.

Indexing essentially means adding web content to Google for ranking purposes.

When you create a new page on your website, you can index it in a number of ways.

The easiest way to get a page index is to do nothing at all.

Google has crawlers that follow links, so if your site is already in the index and new content is linked from your site, Google will eventually find it and add it to its index. More on that later.

How to get page index faster

But what if you want Googlebot to reach your pages faster?

This can be important if you have timely content, or if you have made important changes to pages that need Google to know about.

I use the faster method when I optimize key pages or adjust the title and/or description to increase CTR. I want to know exactly when they are picked up and displayed in the SERPs to see where the improved metrics start.

In these cases, you can use some other methods.

1. XML Sitemap

XML sitemap is the oldest and universally reliable method of getting search engines’ attention to content.

An XML sitemap provides search engines with a list of all pages on your site, along with other details about it, such as when it was last modified.

A sort of Sitemaps can be submitted to Bing pass Bing Webmaster Tools also via search console.

Absolutely recommend!

But it’s not particularly reliable when you need to index pages right away.

2. Request indexing using Google Search Console

In Search Console, you can “Request Indexing”.

You start by clicking on the search field at the top, which by default says “Check and URL in domain.com”.

Enter the URL to be indexed and press Enter.

If the page is already known to Google, you will see a lot of information about the page. We won’t discuss it here, but if you’re not already logged in, I recommend logging in and seeing what’s in there.

For our purposes, the Important button appears regardless of whether the page is indexed – meaning it facilitates content discovery or simply asks Google to be aware of recent changes.

You will find the button as shown below.

Within seconds to minutes, you can search Google for new content or URLs and find new content that has been changed or extracted.

3. Participate in Bing’s IndexNow

Bing has an open protocol based on a push method that alerts search engines of new or updated content.

this new The search engine indexing protocol is called IndexNow.

It’s called a push protocol because the idea is to use IndexNow to alert search engines about new or updated content, which will cause them to index it.

An example of a pull protocol is the old XML Sitemap approach, which relied on search engine crawlers to decide to access it and index it (or get it by Search Console).

The benefit of IndexNow is that it wastes less web hosting and data center resources, which is not only environmentally friendly but also saves bandwidth resources.

The biggest benefit, however, is faster content indexing.

IndexNow is currently only used by Bing and Yandex.

Implementing IndexNow is simple:

4. Bing Webmaster Tools

In addition to participating in IndexNow, consider using a Bing Webmaster Tools account.

If you don’t have a Bing Webmaster Tools account, I can’t recommend it enough.

It’s a wealth of information that will help you better assess your problem area and improve your rankings on Bing, Google, and everywhere else—and possibly provide a better user experience.

But in order for your content to be indexed, you just have to click: Configure My Site > Submit URL.

From there enter the URL you want indexed and click Submit.

So this is pretty much everything you need to know about indexing and how search engines do it (with an eye toward where things are going).

More details at Bing Webmaster Tools URL Submission Tool Help Page.

there’s still one Bing Webmaster Tools Indexing API This can also speed up the time content appears in Bing search results to hours.More information about Bing Indexing API is here.

Crawl budget

We can’t really talk about indexes without talking about Crawl budget.

Basically, crawl budget is a term used to describe how much resources Google will spend to crawl a website.

The allocated budget is based on a combination of factors, two of which are core:

  • How fast your server is (ie how much Google can crawl without degrading your user experience).
  • How important your website is.

If you run a major news site with constantly updated content, search engine users will want to know that your site is being crawled often (dare I say… often).

If you run a small barber shop, have dozens of links, and are considered unimportant in the context (you might be an important barber in the area, but don’t matter when it comes to grabbing your budget), then the budget can be very Low.

You can read more about crawl budgets and how they are determined in Google’s explanation here.

Google has two ways of crawling

Google’s index starts with crawling, it has two.

The first type of crawling is discovery, where Google discovers new pages to add to the index.

The second way to crawl is refresh, where Google looks for changes in indexed pages.

Explore how search engines work

Optimizing a website for SEO starts with good content and ends with sending it to get indexed.

Whether you’re using an XML sitemap, Google Search Console URL submission tool, Bing Webmaster Tools, or IndexNow, getting your content indexed is the moment when your pages start their journey to the top of search results (if all goes well!).

That’s why it’s important to understand how search indexes work.
