First Cat Raising Experience | Dawn and Hope

We are the adoptive parents of fur babies. We have been raising dogs since 2016, and last week was the first time we raised two adult cats. So if you are an animal lover, pet owner, animal rescuer or just like companion animals, please keep reading!

Please note-this article should be a sequel to the previous travel article about our first vacation in Pittsburgh after the pandemic. But I put my recent foster care experience blog post here, and now my next post is our New York vacation after visiting Pittsburgh. So please stay tuned for my next travel article, after you enjoy reading our first experience of raising cats.

background

We are a family of four with a busy and active lifestyle. Both of our parents work full-time, and both children have academic burdens and extracurricular activities. My two children are animal lovers and have been asking us for pets since they were young. When we explained that our daily schedule was very busy and we took at least two vacations a year, they understood our reasons, and our family might not be ready to accept pets and promised to concentrate on pets for years. When my eldest daughter was 12 years old, she started volunteering and helping in the animal shelter. In addition to volunteer service opportunities, she also applied for foster care. In November 2016, we got the first foster care fog-Luger. This is a great parenting experience, we continue it and still do it today. So far, we have raised 8 dogs-as short as 1 week to 2 years! If you are interested, please read This post about us Cultivate experience.

COVID era

Since March last year, we have raised four dogs, including Tigger, Hayley and two short-term dogs-Luna and Montana. Almost all of our foster caretakers are mothers who have had children recently. Once the puppies are weaned, usually within 4-6 weeks, the mother is sterilized and then adopted after recovery. Montana was the only one who came to us before the operation. Everyone else had already received the operation. We kept them until they found their eternal home. The one we raised recently is Luna, who was with us a few months ago. We have not been in foster care for nearly 4 months, and my children really miss foster care.

Keep a cat

Since we do not have a dog, this time my youngest son started to apply for a cat. I believe she is more like a cat lover than my old dog lover. Of course, as a family, we all have the same intention to help and are willing to raise any companion animals. So her research started by talking to her piano teacher who has 6 cats! We are lucky because she applied to 3 organizations on Friday, and we received their responses on the weekend, filled out and completed all the paperwork, and the cat fostering was available as early as Tuesday! I registered their Facebook page, and on the same day I found that these two adult cats were looking for foster families from Wednesday to Monday. Of course, we agreed and picked them up as soon as the shelter opened at 10 am.

The next day, we learned that the travel plan of another foster caretaker to be adopted on Monday was extended and that foster care was not possible. We were asked if we would train them for another 2 weeks, and we said yes! We have been raising cats for almost a week, and we have no better start than this.

Our experience

We are lucky to have the ingenious Dodge and Oliver Twist together! The two have very different personalities and completely opposite personalities, but they accompany each other and are happy together. When two people are together, they entertain themselves and get along very well. Dodge is the more interesting and explorer kind. Oliver is a quieter and more patient person. So far, our first experience with litter boxes, feeding and caring for cats is progressing well. After loving dogs and raising dogs for 5 years, we were hesitant to raise cats, but this couldn’t be better. They are totally cute cats. They let us pet them, follow us like dogs (sometimes), greet us when we go home (sometimes, not always), are trained in garbage, eat well, and play well, which is great Companion animals.

I would recommend it to anyone who is not sure whether to add cats to their lives and dog lovers. I know many families with only dogs or cats, but over the years I have known many families with dogs and cats living together in harmony. We have not been there yet, but hope to think about this experience someday.

Generalize

Cultivating is really a sense of accomplishment! Providing temporary shelter for homeless pets or abandoned mixed breeds until they find a permanent home is both fulfilling and satisfying. Keeping pets can help reduce stress and may improve your mental health. Cultivation is fun, flexible and enjoyable. I would encourage anyone to try it.

Dear readers, we would be happy to hear from you. Do you have pets or rescue animals in your house? Are you a cat person or a dog person? Do you have parenting experience? If so, please share your story.
