Google’s November core update ends

According to official news, Google’s November core algorithm update will end on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, the second day of the popular Cyber Monday shopping day. Before the next algorithm update, sites that have risen or fallen in rankings should not expect additional changes in their status.

Google Announcing the end of the core update rollout On Twitter:

“The November 2021 core update is now live. Like these updates, a full rollout usually takes about one to two weeks.”

Changes in traffic during the algorithm may not be related to the update. Coincidence does happen, but hope is slim.

The changes seen today can be said to be permanent. Before the next update, there should only be daily rankings rise and fall. This is a characteristic of the constantly updated search index.

Unlike the past search indexes that remain fixed for one month at a time, today’s search engines are more dynamic and more responsive to links and content.

What remains unchanged is the underlying process itself.

What is the November update?

Search the community to share insights

Many search marketers agree that the core algorithm update in November did not have the disruptive impact of a major update.

Japanese SEO Kenichi Suzuki (@铃木)

The respected Japanese search marketer Kenichi Suzuki published his observations on the impact of Japanese Google search results.

Kenichi shares:

“Compared with other core updates, the November 2021 core update seems to have a much smaller impact on rankings.

Ranking changes are no different from daily fluctuations.

In other words, we have seen Google look more closely at who (author/company) publishes content. “

Jason Barnard (@jasonmbarnard)

On November 16, the day before the update, Jason Barnard noticed the dramatic fluctuations in the Google Knowledge Graph:

Is this related to the update released the next day?

No one knows for sure, but this is an interesting juggling that accompanies the main event.

Jason offered his views on what happened in the knowledge graph:

“Here, we let Google announce the core update on November 17, and the knowledge graph has become crazy from the day before.

On the same day, the knowledge graph was also “deepened” (that is, the results returned by the query were 6% more on average…).

This number has not changed for at least 2 years. So this 6% is big news. “

Emmon Johns (@Ammon_Johns)

I asked Ammon Johns, a well-respected search marketer, about the update.

Aimon shared:

“There is currently no unified theme, and there are no problems or symptoms that suddenly recur in various SEO groups.

Only in the weeks leading up to the update did many smaller site owners experience a large number of issues that reduced crawling, and sites with lower crawl priority found that they were unable to index new content. “

Ammon refers to the increasing focus of the global search marketing community on how Google indexes less content.

This began to peak in October 2021 and continues to be a source of anxiety for many publishers.

Steven Kahn (@SEOSignalsLab)

Steven Kang is the administrator of the popular SEO Signals Lab Facebook community. His community has thousands of members and countless discussions every day. If anyone has the pulse of the search community on social media, it is Steven Kang.

The following are Steve’s observations on the core update:

“The results I saw were mixed. Some rose, some fell. I didn’t see the difference in earthquakes…”

Jim Boykin (@吉姆博伊金) – Founder of Network Marketing Ninja

Jim Boykin has been working in SEO for more than 20 years. One thing I have observed about Jim is that he is open to change and able to adapt quickly, which makes his opinion more important to me.

These are Jim’s observations of Google’s November update:

“We have 12 customers whose ranking/traffic has improved very well, about 25 customers have not seen much under any circumstances, and we have 7 customers whose ranking has dropped slightly. About 5 of the 7 that dropped Ranked 1-3 positions. Two of these seven have fallen more sharply.

In general, this is just another algorithm update…every time there will be winners and losers…I just try to make the site better and emphasize doing this to those who are negatively affected. “

Bill Haze (@bhartzer)

Bill Hartzer, another search marketer with more than 20 years of experience, agrees with the observation that this update has little impact.

Bill observes:

“I think this seems to be a minor update.”

Is the update part an infrastructure update?

Many people in the search industry generally think this update is a relatively mild update. This is interesting in itself, because it may indicate that the underlying algorithm architecture has changed. It still does the same thing, relatively speaking, but it does it more efficiently and faster.

Before the core algorithm update was a spam update, it probably cleared the negative impact table on the search index, making the search index cleaner and less spam.

FLAN Machine Learning Research Paper

This is particularly interesting because Google AI has published research on new machine learning models. These models are not good at doing many things. This is different from the previous models. The previous models do one thing very well and require multiple models to do it. All these different things. thing.

One such model is called FLAN, and it was launched as a research paper in October. What FLAN does is to focus natural language training on solving different types of tasks, and then generalize the method so that it can be applied to various tasks.

Google launches Pathways, a new AI architecture

The November core algorithm update started on November 17, 2021, and was completed on November 30, nearly two weeks later.

If Google wants to introduce a new and more effective way to accomplish what it is already doing, then this may require spam updates to clear the spam board, and then slowly introduce new algorithmic architectures throughout the system.

Perhaps not coincidentally, at about the same time as the FLAN study was published, Google officially announced a new AI architecture called Pathways, which seems to have done many things that FLAN claims to improve.

The Google Pathways announcement states:

“Many times, machine learning systems are over-specialized on a single task, and they can perform well on many tasks.

This is why we built Pathways-a new AI architecture that can handle multiple tasks at the same time, quickly learn new tasks, and better reflect the understanding of the world.

…. Today’s AI models are usually trained to do only one thing.

Pathways will allow us to train a model to do thousands of things. “

One thing to note is that the Pathways article published in October 2021 refers to what they are going to build, not what they have already introduced.

So it is entirely possible that Pathways will not be introduced in the core algorithm update in mid-November 2021.

Ammon Johns is reminded of the Hummingbird update

Ammon Johns said that the core algorithm update in November 2021 feels like an infrastructure update.

Aimon shared his thoughts:

“I remembered the Hummingbird update. Before the news broke, it had actually been online for a few months or something similar, but no one noticed it.”

I agree with Aimon. In general, the November 2021 update has a relatively mild impact on search results.

This is what makes it feel like an infrastructure-related update that makes Google’s algorithm more efficient.

Highlights of Google’s November 2021 Core Update

I think most people will agree that Google’s core update is a bit weird.

  • Japanese search marketer Kenichi Suzuki believes that Google pays more attention to authorship signals.
  • Jason Barnard noticed the extreme fluctuations in the knowledge graph. He shared that the results returned by Google based on the knowledge graph increased by 6%. Jason said the 6% growth is huge, and on a scale he has never seen before.
  • Ammon Johns agrees with me that the quiet nature of this update may indicate that Google has made more infrastructure-related changes.
  • Social media has been relatively calm in this update, which shows that any impact it has has not been felt as widely as the major update.
  • Finally, Google published an article and a research paper, showing that the improvement of Google’s algorithm can greatly speed up the current question and answer task, and greatly improve Google’s ability to answer more complex questions in the future.
