Officials said a Palestinian gunman from the Islamic organization Hamas killed an Israeli in the Old City of Jerusalem on Sunday and wounded three others before being shot dead by police.
This incident was the second attack in Jerusalem in four days and occurred near a gate of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in Islam. The Jews regarded the site as the remains of two ancient temples.
Hamas identified the gunman as one of its leaders in East Jerusalem, an area where Palestinians sought to establish a state.
Unlike the more moderate Palestinian Authority that rules in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, refuses to coexist permanently with Israel.

Britain banned Hamas on Friday, bringing London’s position in line with the United States and the European Union.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett told the cabinet: “On such a morning, people can get from the (Britain) decision to designate Hamas (including so-called political factions) as a terrorist organization. support.”
Police said Sunday’s attack also injured a second civilian and two Israeli policemen. The deceased was identified as a recent Jewish immigrant from South Africa.
In the 1967 Middle East War, Israel occupied the Old City and other parts of East Jerusalem and annexed it as the capital, a move that was not recognized internationally.
