What is a poke bowl?

Poke Bowl is a Hawaiian dish consisting of diced raw fish, usually tuna or salmon, marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil. It is spread over rice and topped with an assortment of fresh vegetables, fruits and sauces.

Hawaiian Poke Bowl Ingredients and Substitutions

This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for Hawaiian poke bowls, the role each ingredient plays in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.

Ahi tuna:

  • sushi grade fish – I used tuna, also known as yellowfin tuna. You can use other sashimi-grade fish, such as salmon, or cooked seafood, such as boiled shrimp, boiled scallops, or boiled crabmeat. For a vegetarian option (if you can tolerate soy), you can use firm or extra-firm tofu.
  • coconut aminos – You can also use regular or low sodium soy sauce (not my favorite), or other soy sauce substitute.
  • Honey – you can use regular honey for this poke sushi bowl recipe, or Zero Sugar Honey If you want to cut down on added sugar.
  • sesame oil – Adds an earthy, nutty flavor to ahi tuna marinade for a traditional sashimi bowl flavor.

Hawaiian Poke Bowls:

  • cooked white rice – I use white rice, but you can also use brown rice, sushi rice, or other cooked grains like quinoa for this tuna poke bowl recipe. Cauliflower Fried Rice Great for low carb options.
  • avocado – Add a creamy element to the poke bowl.
  • tropical fruit – I used pineapple here, but you can use mango, papaya, or guava for a tropical Hawaiian poke bowl flavor.
  • vegetable – Cucumbers and radishes add a fresh kick to this healthy Poke Bowl recipe for the perfect balance of textures and flavors. You can also make poke bowl recipes with other vegetables, such as carrots or edamame (if you can tolerate soy).
  • chili mayonnaise – A delicious mix of mayonnaise and Sriracha. Lemony Aioli Works fine here too.
  • decorations – Serve the tuna poke bowl with scallions (aka scallions) and sesame seeds The perfect combination of salty and nutty. You can also add coriander or ginger (pickled or freshly grated).

storage instructions

Remove the avocados (which don’t hold fast) and transfer each maki bowl to an airtight container. Sprinkle a few drops of water over the rice to prevent it from drying out in the refrigerator. Refrigerate for up to 2 days.

If you’re going to be meal prepping, your poke bowl will keep a little better if you store the ingredients separately.
