ingredients you need
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for a simple chicken lettuce wrap, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. See recipe card below for measurements.
Almost all healthy recipes on my site have fewer than 10 ingredients, but I occasionally make an exception. These Asian Lettuce Chicken Wraps have more ingredients to get the flavor right. Don’t worry, these are simple, common ingredients that come together in an instant!
Sauce:
- Coconut Amino Acids – This is similar to soy sauce, but without gluten and soy. You can also use soy sauce, low-sodium soy sauce, or soy sauce if they suit your dietary needs.
- toasted sesame oil – Use high-quality sesame oil for the best flavor.
- rice wine vinegar – This helps add acid to the sauce and balances the flavor. Other neutral vinegars such as white or white wine vinegar will also work.
- Tahini – Tahini is a tahini (like nut butter, but with sesame seeds) that adds a creamy flavor to the sauce and doesn’t contain any dairy. You can also use cashew butter as a substitute, or even peanut butter, but the flavor will be different.
- lime juice – This helps brighten the sauce.Use fresh for the best flavor (plus, fresh lime wedges are a great garnish to squeeze on a lettuce wrap!), or bottled For convenience.
- sea salt & Black pepper – Sriracha is also a great addition if you want more heat than black pepper.
Lettuce Wraps:
- chicken – You can also use ground turkey, ground pork or ground beef.if you have some chicken shreds Or have cooked chicken breast on hand, you can also use that and add it after the vegetables are fully cooked.
- Avocado Oil – or any high-temperature cooking oil, such as olive oil.
- Cream of Mushrooms – or any other mushroom such as white button or shiitake. Cut them into small pieces so they combine nicely with the shredded chicken.
- Bell Pepper – I used red bell peppers, but orange or yellow would work too. Again, cut into small pieces.
- white onion – White onions taste great, but you can also use yellow onions. Like other vegetables, onions are diced.
- garlic – Use fresh garlic for best flavor, or canned garlic For convenience.
- ginger – Use fresh ginger for best flavor, or canned ginger For convenience.
- water chestnut – These add a nice crunch to the lettuce chicken wrap, but are optional. They’re higher in carbs, so if that’s important to you, skip them.
- butter lettuce – Butter lettuce (sometimes called Boston or bib lettuce) is my favorite lettuce wrap because the leaves are wide and wrap well, but you can use a variety of lettuces. Romaine and iceberg lettuce can also be used.
- optional toppings – green onions, sesame seedsand peanut.
