How to properly clean strawberries to last!
Not long ago I saw a TikTok about how to properly clean strawberries and I was amazed. They really last longer. Gone are the days of storing strawberries in the container they came in. First of all…why wash strawberries
Like many fresh produce, the surface of unwashed berries can contain dirt, bacteria, and pesticides. Therefore, in order not to ingest the above-mentioned dirt, bacteria and pesticides, it is very important to wash them thoroughly before eating!
Which leads me to…Should you buy organic strawberries?
Yes! I always recommend buying organic strawberries because they are not grown with pesticides. You don’t actually need to buy everything organic, but in terms of organic vs. non-organic, berries are a must for me. However, even organic berries can contain dirt and bacteria, so you still need to clean them!
what do you need
You don’t need much cleaning strawberries. Just a few simple ingredients!
- Strawberry (ugh!)
- white vinegar
- filtered water
- big bowl
- filter
- towel
- sealed container
How to Clean Strawberries
So how exactly do we keep our strawberries clean and good for up to 2 weeks? Just follow these easy steps!
- Mix vinegar and water: In a bowl, combine 3 parts water and 1 part vinegar.
- Soak strawberries: Add fresh strawberries to vinegar water and soak for about 10 minutes. Don’t worry, they won’t taste like vinegar!
- Drain and rinse: Drain and rinse the strawberries (to remove all the vinegar smell, no worries!), then place them on a towel to dry.
- Shop: Line an airtight container with paper towels, add the strawberries, and store them in the refrigerator. This step is important to make sure you remove the moisture!
Once the berries are exposed to any moisture, they spoil quickly. I recommend only cleaning as much as possible. However, if you do want to wash them all at once, make sure to dry them thoroughly to remove any moisture. We want them to last as long as possible!
water to vinegar ratio
The rule of thumb is 3 parts water to 1 part vinegar, so 3 cups water to 1 cup vinegar or adjust accordingly!
Washed and unwashed strawberries
Not only is it better for you to wash your strawberries, but this method actually keeps strawberries fresh for longer. On average, fresh strawberries last up to a week in the refrigerator. This method can increase the time to up to 2 weeks!
