How to Earn Points and Badges


Google relies on a community of dedicated volunteers around the world to keep Google Search and Maps updated with the latest information on businesses, places, and local attractions.

These volunteers are called local guide.

When you’re visiting a new city and looking for information about hotels and restaurants, there’s a good chance that Google Local Guides has the information you need to make an informed decision.

Selfless Local Guides Commentphotos, videos, and more, all for the benefit of searchers like you.

Well, it’s almost true.Local Guides do receive virtual reward for their service.

Google developed the Local Guides program to inspire ordinary people to help update maps.

Local Guides also need to verify that the information provided by the business is accurate.

Anyone is eligible to join the Local Guides program – if you’ve already contributed reviews to Google Maps, you might also get some recognition for doing so.

This article explains what the Google Local Guides program is, how to join, and what benefits you can get from it.

What is the Google Local Guides program?

The Google Local Guides program is a gamification system that rewards users for contributing to Google Maps and Google Business Profiles.

As a Local Guide, you earn points for every contribution you make. After accumulating a certain number of points, you can upgrade to new program levels and unlock new badges.

When you leave a comment or answer a question, your badge will appear next to your name in Google Maps, so everyone will recognize you as a local expert.

Points, Levels and Badges

Points can be earned for the following contributions to Google Maps:

  • write comments – 10 points

  • Write a review of over 200 words – 20 points

  • Rate the business – 1 point

  • Upload a photo – 5 points

  • Tag photos – 3 points

  • Upload Video – 7 points

  • Answer the Q&A – 3 points

  • Edit information – 5 points

  • Add a place – 15 marks

  • add road – 15 marks

  • Check for a fact – 1 point

  • Publish eligible listings – 10 points

  • Write a description (in the list) – 5 points

As you accumulate points, you’ll reach higher tiers in the Local Guides program.

At level 4 and above, you’ll earn a badge that appears next to your name when it appears in Google Maps.

The Local Guides program levels are as follows:

  • Level 1 – 0 marks
  • level 2– 15 marks
  • Level 3 – 75 points
  • level 4– 250 points
  • Level 5—— 500 points
  • Level 6 – 1,500 points
  • Level 7 – 5,000 points
  • Level 8 – 15,000 points
  • Level 9— 50,000 points
  • Level 10 – 100,000 points

In the past, Google has offered premium Local Guides incentives such as free cloud storage and discounts on the Google Play Store.

As the program evolved, Google phased out the add-on and now only offers badges.

Local Guides occasionally get early access to new Google features without commitment.

How to join the Google Local Guides program

Visit Google Local Guides registration page then click start using.

Enter the name of your city and click Become a Local Guide.

Start earning points by contributing to Google Maps.

In the dashboard, pictured above, you can track your points and progress towards the next level.

If you allow Google to see your location history, you’ll receive recommendations based on places you’ve been.

However, you don’t need to turn on Location History tracking to join Local Guides. You can always find locations manually and contribute to them.

You can become a Google Local Guide through a simple sign-up process that is available to everyone with a Google account.

Once you’ve contributed enough to reach level 4, when you leave a comment to others, a badge will appear next to your name, indicating that you’re a Local Guide.
