Turning your house into a dream home doesn’t have to be an expensive project. You can start small projects that will save you money in the long run, and most of them are great for DIY. So here’s a list of how to upgrade your home and save money in 2022.

add more insulation

If you’re having trouble heating in the winter, or your house is too hot in the summer and your electricity bills are too high, your insulation may need an upgrade. Plus, insulation is one of the best ways to save money in the long run. For most homes, it’s safe to say adding more insulation to the attic. Also, add insulation between and over the floor joists. Don’t forget to isolate walls and unheated spaces, such as garages.

Make sure each ventilation is sealed with the correct type of insulation, such as around doors and windows. old house insulation is an upgrade that will reduce energy bills, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and will also increase home values.

Switch to LED bulbs

One of the easiest ways to upgrade and save money is to ditch the incandescent bulbs and switch to LEDs. For example, if you replace only 5 of your most commonly used light fixtures with LED bulbs, you can save about $75 per year. Also, LED bulbs and CFLs have a longer lifespan, around 10,000 to 25,000 hours, compared to 1,000 hours for incandescent bulbs. One way to save even more money is to buy smart bulbs and control them through an app. In this way, you can turn off the lights, set a schedule and save electricity.

low flow shower

there are many Affordable ways to make your bathroom look more attractive and more practical. This tip might not sound all that magical, but, you can save money by simply replacing your shower head. We know amazing water pressure can help you have a great shower, but they waste a lot of water. Showerheads can allow 3 to 5 gallons per minute, while new low flow showerheads can allow 1.5 to 2.5 gallons per minute. For example, if you’re a family of four, you can save $70 just by replacing your old shower head.

go without tanks

If your water heater is running out of steam, now is the perfect time to buy a tankless water heater. Tankless water heaters can be 34% more efficient than regular water heaters. Compared to traditional water heaters that use 40 gallons of water per day, tankless water heaters heat water on demand. The advantage of tankless water heaters is that they are easier to service and last longer. However, they cost more to install than traditional water heaters. Also, traditional heaters have a lifespan of around 10-15 years, while tankless heaters can last 20 years or more.

Upgrade the kitchen

Kitchen appliances are what make a kitchen look put together. So, old kitchen utensils will not only make your kitchen look stale and boring, but also make your food spoil faster. When shopping for new kitchen appliances, look for appliances that won’t need replacing in a few years. You don’t have to upgrade your entire kitchen, just replace one aging appliance at a time. For example, upgrading from an old refrigerator to a new one can save you about $200 over the life of the product.

Install ceiling fans

Ceiling fans alone cannot cool the air, however, paired with an air conditioner, it can cool a room by 4 degrees. This means you can save on utility bills while staying comfortable. Also, in winter, ceiling fans can help push warm air to the floor by simply reversing the direction.

These are just some of the ways you can upgrade and save money in 2022. Be sure to take the time, one project at a time, to make your home a comfortable and wonderful place to relax.
