Delta Air Lines pilot Alexander Kahn (Alexander Kahn) once flew an evacuation flight carrying Afghans out of Ramstein Air Base in Germany. He said that because of his father’s experience decades ago, he “can Put yourself in their place”.
“I am the son of an American immigrant,” he told Friday “CNN New Day”“My father is a Holocaust survivor. He was liberated from Buchenwald concentration camp by Patton’s Third Army and came to the United States. He is no different from the people who come to the United States now.”
Kahn said that when his father came to the United States, he was only carrying clothes on his back, he had no family, and had no English skills. He “had to start life again.”
“Fortunately, he restarted his life in a land full of opportunities,” Kahn added.
Because of his father’s experience, Kahn was able to realize that this would be a “terrible” experience for the Afghans he brought to the United States, “but it has the potential to be an excellent experience,” he said.
This mission was also very special for Kahn, because he first learned how to fly a plane at Ramstein Air Force Base and obtained a private pilot’s license there.
He said it was “very exciting” for him.
“We are a generous country because we are a generous person and the future is theirs,” the pilot said.
