I’m going to Japan – Bill Mitchell – MMT

Today, I skip my Japanese class and head to the airport. I am working on a JSPS Invited Scholarship position at Kyoto University. I’m working with a team in the Resilience Sector on a project that examines the design of fiscal policy to build national resilience using the principles of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). Resilience is an important part of the degradation and deep adaptation agenda, and I will be working there with other researchers for several months. This – Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) is “Japan’s only independent funding agency dedicated to scientific progress” and is overseen by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. I am honored to receive one of these invitations. So starting tomorrow, I’ll be in Kyoto, and as promised, my blog posts may be less regular, although I think I’ll be able to continue my normal output. Now, it’s time to put my Tuesday language class into practice – and Google Translate! Next up is some travel music.

travel music

First, the very short (1:15) track — from Willing Street —One of my favorite post-minimalist composers, Max Richter, from his — previous song – 2006 album.

This is a very beautiful work.

Like most post-minimalist compositions and Max Richter’s playing, it seems relatively simple in construction. But try to play it on the piano – it’s a seemingly difficult piece to get the timing just right.

Trying to match the sound of the piece to the actual streets of 20ème in Paris inspired the music.

next song– i’m still waiting – was one of the first released by Wailers based on it studio one recording and production Clement Coxon Dodd

It was released in 1965 — Wailer – with soul brothers. It has been dubbed “Jamaica’s most acclaimed singing sensation”.

The wailers were, of course, Bunny Livingston, Bob Marley and Peter “Tosh” McIntosh.

Soul Brothers, Studio One’s house band and starring on many rock stable/ska/reggae records in the 1960s, were mostly jazz musicians trying to make extra cash.

They started out as the Skatalites (Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook, Jackie Mittoo, Lester Sterling and Lloyd Brevett), but became the Sound Dimension when trombonist Don Drummond was imprisoned in 1965 for the murder of his wife. Other musicians also joined the “band”.

The vibrato on the guitar is beautiful. A true rock classic.

This is the original album cover.

in conclusion

A day of travel and music.

Back to practice tomorrow. all the best.

Enough for today!
