India reports 3998 Covid deaths after the country corrected its data

  • India reported its highest death toll in a month on Wednesday-nearly 4,000.
  • The state of Maharashtra checked its death toll with the previously unreported 3509 people.
  • According to official data, the total number of infections in India is 31.22 million and the death toll is 418,480.

The Ministry of Health of India said that after its wealthiest state checked its death toll with a previously unreported 3,509, India reported its highest death toll in a month-nearly 4,000 on Wednesday.

The Federal Ministry of Health said on Wednesday that Maharashtra, home to the financial capital of Mumbai, reported 130,753 of the country’s 418,480 deaths from the coronavirus, and added 3,509 early deaths to its statistics.

The ministry did not give a reason, but the authorities have attributed other unreported deaths to administrative errors in the past, and these errors were only discovered and appeared in official data.

Last month, the poor northern State of Bihar increased the death toll by more than 5,000 people in one day, including some unrecorded data.

The sudden appearance of the previously unrecorded death toll raises the suspicion that India’s total death toll is significantly higher than the official figure.

According to official data, the total number of infections in India is 31.22 million and the death toll is 418,480.

But the Washington-based Global Development Center estimated in a report on Tuesday that the actual death toll from Covid-19 in India could be as high as 4.9 million.

Ministry of Health data shows that on Wednesday, the government reported 42,015 new coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours.
