Indonesian e-commerce company Bukalapak will hire 100 new employees over the next three to four years to expand its workforce at its technology hub in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, in a rare expansion of its Indonesian operations Down Under.
According to Bukalapak CEO Willix Hali, the company’s product, technology, data and design departments need additional specialist staff, which include software engineering and data science.
“In the past few years, we’ve increasingly invested in talent outside Indonesia, and one of the countries we’re focusing on is Australia,” he said in a March 7 webinar hosted by the Australia-Indonesia Centre for Research.
“[We are] Look for people with experience in scaling software design, software architecture, and more,” he added.
The first offshore technology center
Bukalapak opened its R&D centre in Melbourne in September 2021 as its first offshore technology centre, driven by a push by the local government in Victoria to attract global companies to create jobs and bring innovation.
The center currently employs a team of senior engineers focusing on analytics, artificial intelligence and various R&D activities in the field of e-commerce. Bukalapak is also exploring partnership opportunities with local universities.
“Melbourne’s tech ecosystem is an ideal base for Bukalapak to establish this tech hub, enabling Indonesia’s tech talent to collaborate with tech professionals from Australia and around the world,” said Bukalapak president Teddy Oetomo when the centre opened last year.
“This diverse technology lineup will open up opportunities for upskilling and strategic collaborations to support Bukalapak to better meet the growing demands of the market,” he added.
Founded in 2010, Bukalapak started out as an online marketplace to help small and medium businesses get online and has since expanded to support small traditional family businesses or warungs in Indonesia. The company is listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange.
