Internet of Things News-ETSI releases IoT test specifications for MQTT, CoAP and industrial automation and control systems


The ETSI Test and Specification Methodology Committee (TC MTS) recently completed the first set of seven standards for testing IoT MQTT and CoAP protocols and basic security IoT-Profile.

Axel Rennoch, Chairman of TC MTS ETSI Test Working Group said:

“These new standards fill the gaps in the quality assessment of some of the most relevant communication protocols and system requirements for today’s industrial IoT systems using ETSI standardized test technology.”

It can be used as a reference for client-side testing activities and server-side testing activities. All test destination directories are generated using the test description language (TDL-TO) specified in ETSI ES 203 119-4. The TDL-TO library module corresponding to the test destination directory is included in the file attached to the standard. The development of TDL-TO was achieved using the TDL Open Source Project (TOP), which is a free tool supported by ETSI members for writing and verifying TDL code.

The work of the ETSI MTS Committee Test Team (TST) has been considered by the active open source project currently hosted by the Eclipse Foundation: IoT-Testware. It includes the test purpose in TDL-TO and the development of TTCN-3 test code, which is very important for the execution of test activities in the test laboratory. Thanks to this collaborative work, the organization is now able to execute MQTT and CoAP test procedures based on the standardized test target catalog published by ETSI.

The MTS Testing (TST) Working Group develops studies, guidelines, test catalogs, and test specifications for specific ICT technologies that are not covered by other ETSI groups. Testing can include, but is not limited to, conformance, interoperability, security, and performance testing.
