Internet of Things News-Soracom Introduces Next Generation iSIM Function

The proof of concept addresses the need for advanced IoT devices and smaller form factors.

Soracom, Inc., a global provider of advanced IoT connectivity, today announced the completion of a proof-of-concept (PoC), demonstrating integrated SIM (iSIM) capabilities designed to support next-generation IoT devices.

This demonstration represents the joint efforts of both parties Solakone, Sony Semiconductor Israel Ltd. (Sony), a leading supplier of cellular IoT chipsets, and Primitive, A global security leader that provides security certification for cellular IoT devices.

In traditional cellular applications, the device uses a hardware communication module to establish a network connection, and uses a SIM card or eSIM to verify identity. iSIM technology combines these functions in a specially constructed system-on-chip (SoC).

By eliminating the need for physical SIM (or eSIM), iSIM technology Solving multiple key challenges at once, simplifying the supply chain and allowing significant reductions in board space, circuit complexity, manufacturing costs, and power requirements, while increasing processing power. In addition, iSIM is considered to be highly resistant to threats and is attracting people’s attention as the next-generation SIM technology.

“We are honored to work with industry-leading technology partners to demonstrate iSIM capabilities,” Said Kenta Yasukawa, co-founder and chief technology officer of Soracom.

“We believe that iSIM technology will support a new wave of innovation in the industry and daily life. We look forward to popularizing this feature through eSIM technology and the’subscription container’ for over-the-air (OTA) subscription management.”

In this working PoC, a hardware security zone was established in Sony’s Altair ALT1250 cellular IoT chipset, and then Kigen™ iSIM operating systemThe solution provides complete functions, including generating Soracom’s unique key information, securely loading operator profile information on the module, connecting to the cellular network, and connecting to Soracom’s advanced platform services.

“Sony is a pioneer in the development of iSIM, and we have seen this technology play a key role in the continued growth and adoption of the cellular Internet of Things,” Said Dima Feldman, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing, Sony Semiconductor Israel. “Our chipset is the smallest and most feature-rich solution in the industry, providing the longest battery life on the market for many IoT applications. We are very pleased to see Soracom using iSIM technology on its network because it enables customers worldwide Able to provide easy-to-integrate, economical, durable and secure IoT solutions on a large scale.”

Based on this initial success, Soracom, Sony and Kigen will continue to develop jointly to provide iSIM solutions for commercial use.

“We believe that the next innovation that transitions to billions of IoT devices will require basic security that is easy to build and manage at scale, and iSIM technology provides this,” Said Loic Bonvarlet, Kigen’s vice president of product and marketing.

“The combination of Kigen’s market-leading secure iSIM operating system, configuration services and market expertise, Sony’s iSIM chipset and Soracom’s global connectivity will pave the way for energy-efficient, compact and securely designed IoT solutions.”
