Italian vowels – what are they and how are they pronounced?

There are two basic types of sounds in Italian, and any language for that matter – vowels and consonants.

Consonants occur when you use different parts of your mouth, such as the lips, tongue, or roof of your mouth, to block airflow. On the other hand, vowels are created when you allow air to flow unimpeded. What distinguishes one Italian vowel from another is the position of the tongue in the mouth.

What are the vowels in Italian?

The Italian alphabet consists of five vowels: One, e, A generation, ○ and you. These vowels can be divided into two categories: “monophonic vowels” and “diphonic vowels”.

Unlike English, Italian vowels are pure vowels, which means that each letter always corresponds to one vowel instead of two combined vowels (called diphthongs).

Take simple words like “no” for example. Although spelled the same in English and Italian, with the single sound ‘o’, it is pronounced /nəʊ/ (diphthong) in English and /nɔ/ (a pure vowel) Italian.

This is not to say that diphthongs (actually triphthongs) don’t exist in Italian – there are many – but each individual sound is almost always represented by a letter, for example, A generation and ○ a sentence Mio (mine) or A generation and One exist indicator light (spy).
