Israeli police said that Israeli security forces shot and killed a young assailant in the Old City of Jerusalem on Wednesday. He stabbed and wounded two policemen.
According to the police, a 16-year-old East Jerusalem resident attacked near the Jewish religious school and the policemen sustained minor injuries.
Emergency workers said that the attack took place in the Muslim quarter and the injured included a man and a woman. They were taken to the hospital.
The police statement stated that the assailant had been “neutralized” and a police spokesperson confirmed to AFP that the assailant had been killed.
The old city is located to the east of Jerusalem annexed by Israel, and the Palestinians claim it is the capital of their future country.
The attack took place near a Jewish religious school associated with the Ateret Cohanim organization, a well-funded settlement organization that claimed its mission was to make “Jewish life in Jerusalem flourish.”
Lone wolf attacks against Israeli security forces are common in the Old City.
The most recent incident occurred in late September, when a woman tried to stabbing a police officer on the street leading to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and was shot.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem in the Six-Day War in 1967 and later annexed it, a move that was not recognized by most of the international community.
