Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for your Korean Ground Beef Bowl, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
Cauliflower Fried Rice:
- olive oil – saute. Avocado oil or any neutral high-heat cooking oil would also work.
- cauliflower – You can use frozen or fresh cauliflower for cauliflower rice.Alternatively, use the remaining cooked cauliflower rice If you have some.
- sea salt and black pepper
If you prefer to use regular rice for your Korean beef rice bowls, you can cook it your favorite method and use that as a base instead of cooking the cauliflower rice.
Beef Stir-Fry Sauce:
- olive oil – saute.
- Ground beef – I made a Korean ground beef bowl, but you can really use any type of ground meat you have or your favorite, including ground turkey, chicken or pork. I used 85/15 ground beef, but you can also use 90/10 lean beef or 80/20 beef with a higher fat content (you may need to drain it if using 80/20). Another option is to use thinly sliced flank or skirt steaks instead.
- sea salt
- garlic – I use fresh garlic for flavor, but you can use 2 tsp canned minced garlic or 1/2 tsp garlic powder For convenience.
- coconut aminos – Adds sweetness and umami to sauces. This is a healthier soy sauce substitute, but feel free to use traditional low-sodium soy sauce.
- beef soup – Helps make the sauce.you can also use beef bone broth For a richer sauce with more nutrients.
- sesame oil – Adds a nutty flavor and aroma.i prefer toasted sesame oilBut routine works too.
- ginger powder – Ginger powder is convenient, but you can use fresh if you have it. If you choose fresh, sauté at the same time with 1 tablespoon of freshly grated ginger and garlic.
- crushed red pepper flakes – The red pepper flakes are a bit spicy, you can leave it out if you don’t like spicy.
decorate:
- green onions – Adds layers of fresh flavor and extra texture.
- sesame seeds – A sprinkle of sesame seeds adds nutty flavor and crunch.
- cucumber – The cucumber slices are totally optional, but I think it will add a nice flavor to the dish. You can add vegetables to Korean beef bowls and top with shredded carrots.
Top Variation: Add a Fried Egg!
For an extra filling meal, top the dish with a fried egg. Many versions of Korean beef bowls recommend using the egg on the other side, but you can cook it however you like.

Tip: Stir fry the cauliflower rice over medium-high heat.
This ensures it is fried rather than steamed, reduces the cauliflower smell, and makes for a better taste.
- Make the sauce. In a small bowl, stir together coconut aminos, beef broth, sesame oil, minced ginger, and red pepper flakes. on hold.
- Sear the beef. Add the ground beef to the pot and cook over medium-high heat until browned.
- Add garlic. Make a well in the beef and add the minced garlic. Saute until fragrant, then stir in the beef.
- Add to the sauce. Pour the sauce over the beef. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Korean beef stir fry paste will become liquid when you add it to the pot, but will thicken and absorb into the meat if you simmer a bit.
