During the downpour on Tuesday afternoon, the capital and surrounding areas may face flooding.
The Met Office issued a new amber thunderstorm warning to parts of southeast England between 4pm and 7pm.
Forecasters warned that water sprays, sudden floods and lightning strikes could cause power outages, damage to buildings and delays in public transportation.
After the temperature at Heathrow Airport in west London reached 32.2 degrees Celsius (89.96 degrees Fahrenheit) on Tuesday afternoon, the UK had its hottest day so far this year.
The previous high this year was 31.6C, which was also set at Heathrow Airport on Sunday.
The amber extreme high temperature warning will also continue until Friday, and temperatures in parts of the country are expected to climb to 33 degrees Celsius.
The thunderstorm may echo the floods witnessed in London and the southeast last week, which affected several subway stations.
Meteorological Bureau forecaster Dan Stroud told PA News Agency: “We have issued some new amber thunderstorm warnings for parts of southeast London, up to parts of Essex and Kent.
“There is also one in the surrounding area of Cambridgeshire.
“We saw some considerable showers in the afternoon, as well as reports of lightning and hail.
“As the afternoon develops, there will be some heavy rains and some slow-moving downpours, which will be seen in some places and not at all.
“There may be some local flooding problems because there will be considerable rainfall-which means that public transportation may be delayed, power outages and potential surface flooding.”
Mr. Stroud said that the recent hot weather brought humid air to the eastern part of the country, which caused heavy downpours.
He said that there may be as much as 40 mm to 60 mm of rain in an hour, and there will be “a lot of” rain in some areas.
Commuters may be the most affected by the downpour, and Southwest Railway reported a track circuit failure in London Waterloo.

“We see the highest temperatures in the southwest and parts of Wales.”
In the next few days, the Met Office has issued an amber extreme high temperature warning to parts of Wales, southwest England, and parts of southern and central England.
