Coast Guard officials found a “help me” message on the roof of the man’s small mining shed during an accidental helicopter overflight on July 16 during an unrelated mission.
“We really don’t meet people in remote places,” Lieutenant AJ Hammac told New York Times“He was struggling a little. When we came over, he was kneeling with both hands, waving a white flag.”
They put down the helicopter and found that the man was injured, lacking sleep, and ran out of ammunition to resist the bear.
