Managing Director of Healthtech Headhunter Shares Industry Insights

According to Aequitas Partners’ website, the executive search firm’s expertise in health technology spans population health, interoperability, medication adherence and oncology care coordination.

Tim Gordon, managing director of Aequitas Partners, responded to emailed questions about what he’s seeing in the job market.

What jobs/roles in digital health have been most in demand over the past year?

Over the past 12 to 18 months, we’ve seen a surge in demand for executives in growth and technology functions. So like CTO, CPO, VP of Engineering, VP of Product, Chief Growth Officer/Chief Revenue Officer, Head of Commercial, VP of Sales, etc. This appears to be primarily driven by the slingshot of Covid-19 hiring suspensions in the third quarter of 2020, and consecutive record quarterly fundraising since then.

Have you identified any emerging roles and hiring trends?

I think we’re going to start seeing a rise in attention [operations] and finance in 2022. These are logical follow-ups for growth and technology leaders to get their work done and position the company for scale. This scale requires serious operational and financial discipline, so I think we’ll see investment in those capabilities. In fact, we already are.

What strategies are companies using to attract the most qualified candidates to compete with larger organizations?

It covers all areas. Things like “job flexibility” are now stakes, not the usual differentiators. Some organizations just paid for it—more cash, more equity, more incentives. Last year we saw more signing bonuses than any previous year. Without expanding budgets, companies are tightening their interview process, focusing on improving the candidate experience and being more decisive when it comes to seeing what they’re looking for.

Are there any positions with a significant upward trend in salaries? If so, what are they?

VPs of Engineering and VPs of Product got a significant boost, as did payer-focused growth leaders — especially if they were selling anything based on value.You can learn more in our 2020 Digital Health Comparative Study here.
