Maud Charlene won the gold medal in the women’s 64 kg weightlifting competition at the Tokyo Olympics.
The 28-year-old from Rimouski, Quebec, won the gold medal after snatching 105 kg and clean and jerk 131 kg, with a total weight of 236 kg.
Charlene raised his hands triumphantly on the podium, seeming to wipe away tears when the Canadian national anthem was played.
“Actually I don’t remember,” Charlene said with a smile when asked about the national anthem. “I was just crying, I didn’t realize what was going on.
“I thought of my grandmother, because once she told me she wanted me to sing the Canadian national anthem, so I sang it-but on the Olympic podium.”
Italy’s Georgia Bodignon won the silver medal and Taiwan’s Chen Wenhui won the bronze medal.
Charlene is the second Canadian woman to win an Olympic weightlifting medal. This is also Canada’s second gold medal won in this Olympic Games.
Charron also participated in the CrossFit competition, according to the biography CrossFit website, Studied at the circus school of the Quebec Circus.
