- simmer: Reduce heat and simmer until heated through.
- Add the cranberries and serve: Remove wine from heat, add cranberries, and serve in glasses garnished with cinnamon sticks and star anise.
What is the best wine for mulled wine?
The best red wines to use in dessert wines are full-bodied reds. We recommend Merlot, Shiraz or Malbec – but whatever you have should work just fine!
What is the alcohol content of mulled wine?
The alcohol level is about the same as the wine you use and the brandy added. So, quite an alcoholic. Enjoy responsibly!
Also, hot drinks are said to enter your bloodstream faster, so keep that in mind as you sip.

Tips and Precautions
- Use mid-range wines. You want something that you’d be happy to add to your dinner party without any spice or sweetener, but not too expensive because adding spice can change the flavor of the wine.
- Use a heavy-duty pan.
- Whole spices only!
- Don’t boil it all. Once you’ve added the remaining red wine and brandy, bring to low heat. Do not boil or you will burn the alcohol.
- Why make the syrup first? Cooking a wine with just a little spice creates a really nice base of flavor without burning off all the alcohol in the drink. That’s why we add the rest of the wine and brandy afterwards.
- Serve with side dishes. I love mulled wine in a glass garnished with fresh cranberries, cinnamon sticks and star anise. It tastes great and looks beautiful too!
How to store
This mulled wine can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
It can be reheated multiple times, but make sure it never boils or you’ll boil off the alcohol again.
