I know as well as anyone that sometimes it can be really hard to find time in the morning to eat a nutritious breakfast. Well, with these overnight oats, you don’t have to!
Overnight oatmeal is one of the easiest meal prep breakfasts ever. Simply combine oats with milk, chia seeds, and optional sweetener, then chill them in the refrigerator. When you wake up in the morning, breakfast is ready!
This overnight oats recipe is really easy, good for you, and customizable.
What are Overnight Oats?
Overnight oats are a way to make rolled oats without cooking. They mix the oatmeal with milk and other ingredients and put them in the fridge overnight so they’re ready to use in the morning!
Overnight oatmeal is great for meal prep and can be customized in so many different ways! I’ll list the basic ingredients needed and then offer ideas for addons and variations so you can make it however you want!

- oat: I use organic, glyphosate-free, gluten-free rolled oats (see below for why), but feel free to take whatever you want.

- Chia seeds: Chia seeds add a little extra texture/thickness and a boost of fiber and nutrients.
- Maple syrup (optional): Sweetener is optional, but delicious!

How to make them!
Overnight oatmeal is the perfect meal prep option. Just mix the ingredients, pop it in the freezer, and you’ll have a nutritious breakfast in the morning!

What kind of oats to use for overnight oats
While you can really use any type of old fashioned oatmeal, I prefer to look for:
- organic
- Certified gluten-free (if desired)
- Non-GMO
- Glyphosate free (probably the most important label to me since oats are an oversprayed crop in the US)

At the very least, I recommend looking for glyphosate-free oats. Glyphosate is a toxic pesticide that can be harmful if ingested. Whether your oats are gluten-free is entirely up to you.
hint: Never use quick-cooking or steel-cut oats. They get so mushy when they sit in the fridge!
What is the best liquid?
Milk of choice! Soaking oats in milk overnight creates the best flavor and delicious creamy texture that can’t be achieved with water.
You can use regular milk or any non-dairy product!
Can you make overnight oats with steel cut oats?
Unfortunately, no. They need to be made with rolled oats. Steel-cut oats are processed differently so they don’t soften into rolled oats without heat.
Can you make this without chia seeds?
certainly. I love the texture and extra nutritional boost that chia seeds add to oatmeal, but they’re totally optional.
How long should overnight oats be?
As the name suggests, letting the oats sit overnight is definitely best, but they’ll actually be done within a few hours. The longer refrigeration time allows the oats to really soak in the milk and become super delicious and creamy.
If you’re short on time, you can shorten the cooldown a bit, but the longer the better! I usually plan for at least 6 hours.
Do you eat your overnight oats hot or cold?

However, you can also reheat them in the microwave or on the stovetop if you have a little extra time or prefer them hot.
How long can overnight oats be kept in the refrigerator?
One of the best parts about this recipe is that you can just put it in the container you plan to store it in and eat it! You can store basic overnight oats in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
If you add any fresh fruit directly to your oatmeal, it should be eaten the next day.
