New Economics Podcast: Why the welfare system fails to benefit people with disabilities


Nearly three million people in the UK are unemployed and unable to work because of illness or disability. According to right-wing media reports, the men's medical conditions were not as serious as they claimed.Meanwhile, a UN committee has warned that disabled people in the UK are suffering NumberTraumatic” welfare system.

Our social safety net has been stripped away, leaving millions struggling to afford essentials, but both major parties are desperate to be seen as NumberStrict welfare requirements.”

So what is wrong with our social security system? Why are politicians so keen to alienate those who depend on it? How do we build a system that provides everyone with the support they need?

Ayeisha Thomas-Smith is joined by liberal disability policy expert and activist Kaliya Franklin and UK disability rights activist Mikey Erhardt this event.
