A global survey of paid search professionals clearly shows how much they earn across industries and regions.
Duane Brown, CEO and head of strategy at Toronto-based advertising agency Take Some Risk Inc., released his seventh annual PPC compensation survey.
Using responses submitted by 715 digital marketing professionals worldwide, the goal is to provide compensation transparency to ensure all PPC professionals are fairly compensated.
This report uses data collected in February 2022 and includes information from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, US, India, UK, Netherlands and other European countries.
Key insights from the report
The 111-slide report contains a wealth of data, including salary breakdowns by region, employer type, experience, and gender. Some key insights include:
- The average salary for a PPC professional is $45,875 to $174,215 in the US, $52,000 to $149,000 in Australia and New Zealand, €37,900 to €67,330 in Europe, and $45,250 to $154,250 in Canada, depending on experience.
- The gender pay gap in the search marketing industry persists, with men with 10-15 years of experience earning on average 11% more in the US, 19.2% more in the UK and 15.2% more in Europe. This gap exists at different experience levels.
- From 2021 to 2022, average wages in this field will increase by about 6.5% in the US, 5% in Canada, 6% in the UK and 11% in Europe. Average wages in Australia and New Zealand remained largely unchanged.
- Salaries for entry-level PPC jobs have declined in most regions over the past year. In Canada and Europe, while they have grown, they are still below the 2020 figures.
- In-house and agency salaries are roughly equal, while freelancers tend to earn more than both, with an average salary of $96,335 in the US, £44,500 in the UK and €68,672 in Europe.
Average Salary Comparison
To better understand the data in this report, we compared estimates and averages from various sources:
Paid Search Analyst, Entry Level – Toronto, Ontario
PPC Specialist, 3 Years Experience – New York, NY
Senior Digital Marketing Manager, 5 years experience – London, UK
Paid Search Specialist, 8 years experience – Berlin, Germany
As you can see, Brown’s data roughly matches what other sites have found.
However, he is careful to point out that some professionals may simply be looking for longer careers for a fee, so their salaries may be higher. An employee who is just beginning his or her career will not have the earning power of someone who has been in the workforce longer and has transitioned to a paid search role.
Furthermore, since these statistics were compiled from self-answered subjects, figures from government sources may not be as accurate as those from government sources.
