Officials in Surfside, Florida are “deeply studying” the structural integrity of a building adjacent to the collapsed Champlain Tannan apartment and are concerned about the safety of residents.

The reason for the sudden collapse of the Champlain Tanan apartment is not clear, but a few years ago, an engineer discovered that part of the building was seriously damaged. Given that Champlain Tower North, about a block away, was built by the same developer and used the same plan, officials worried that its structure might be unreasonable.

Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said officials are working with the apartment associations in the “sisters” building and recommended that it conduct a “comprehensive structural review.”

“We are conducting an in-depth study of the sister building,” Burkert said. “Since we don’t know why the first building collapsed, we are very worried about the building and the residents here.”

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
