Coach Mark Smith expressed confidence in his team’s journey through these Olympics. This is the first Olympic Games featuring baseball since 2008.
“We have the perfect combination of youth and experience, good chemistry, champion culture, and women who are highly committed to their craft,” he told Global News.
“We will win the gold medal. It remains to be seen whether this will happen, but that is our intention.”
Canada is the only team among the five teams that has never won a medal in four Olympic games.
In the six days before the top four qualify for the medal match, all six teams will play against each other once. The first two days were at the baseball stadium in Fukushima. The area was severely affected by the 2011 tsunami and nuclear disaster.
The game between Canada and the United States will be followed by the game between Mexico and Japan, and the game between Italy and Australia later on Thursday.
