Years before the arrival of the notorious drug cartels, the Colombian coastal town of Santa Marta was an idyllic place blessed with natural wonders and the go-to place for cruise ships and steamboats filled with tourists and adventurers from all over the Caribbean destination. Miguel Angel longed to grow up in this environment until a case of police brutality and the murder of a young British backpacker of his friend caused the fabric of his world to collapse.
Amid the violence of a rogue state regime, a single mother goes to great lengths in her constant attempt to protect her son from the fear of fleeing, and her quest for truth and justice leads to a dangerous confrontation with society. Establishment – has a catastrophic effect on the future of a nation.
Miguel Ángel Monzón’s Paradise Erased: A Chronicle of Exile is based on real-life events that certainly made me emotionally invested.
Through Miguel’s account, we learn of the horrific struggles and fears his mom faced trying to keep her son safe. Protect him from the harmful grip of ruthless drug cartels and rogue law enforcement officers.
Miguel’s mother, Carmen, was a former soldier who worked for the F-2 police state. She soon discovers that things are not as they seem, and reveals some very grim secrets that could put her and Miguel’s lives in danger.
A personal disappearance fuels Carmen’s determination to uncover the truth. Carmen is truly inspiring, refusing to let fear rule their lives, yet tirelessly keeping her son safe from the ends of the earth, with eyes on them.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Erase Paradise: Chronicles of Exile. The echoes of real events imbue the story with authenticity that resonated with me. Especially since I’m also a mom and go above and beyond for my kids like Carmen did! What an amazing woman.
