Parent’s Guide to BTEC Eligibility

*This is a collaborative post.

In order to achieve certain goals in life, certain criteria must be met. This means making the right decisions when it comes to education. Most people choose to move up to A Levels after completing GCSEs as it seems like a safe bet and a good way to go down. However, the BTEC qualification is equally beneficial for those who feel that A-levels are not for them and want to try something else. BTEC offers studies in areas that may not even be covered at A level. To help you support your child, here are some from London Private Sixth Form College About what you need to know.

What are they and how do they work?

BTEC is a vocational course and can be studied from level 2, the equivalent of GCSE all the way up to level 7. Level 3 qualifications are aligned with those completing A-levels, meaning vocational students can have similar options for their futures, but study in a way that suits them better. These courses are suitable for people of all ages and offer full-time and part-time options. Apprentices are also part of BTEC and have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to the real world while earning an income.

They differ in that they are generally more practical and coursework-based, which is a great option for those who do not perform well in exam-based methods. However, some BTECs require several examinations at the end of qualification.

If there is no exam, how are they graded?

When it comes to grading, BTEC takes a different approach to GCSEs and A-levels. They are graded on Outstanding, Excellent and Passing. Anything below a pass is a fail.

One of the main questions about studying BTEC is whether these students can go to university? The answer is yes. More and more universities are recognizing the value of vocational learning and are accepting students with these qualifications. If the university is on the list, make sure you have the correct qualification level before continuing.
