Tackling the climate crisis can only be achieved by “putting people at the heart of climate action”, researchers say.
A research team led by the University of Exeter warns against relying solely on breakthroughs in climate science and technology.
Instead, they say social science can help people and society engage and ensure that green transitions are both effective and promote other goals such as well-being, equity and equity.

The paper is the first published by Xinshe Enhancing Capacity in Climate and Environmental Social Sciences (ACCESS) program.
“To achieve our climate goals, we need profound societal change and continuous technological improvement,” said the ACCESS team leader Professor Patrick Devine-Wrightfrom the University of Exeter.
“This dual approach can improve people’s quality of life, reduce emissions and ensure a thriving economy and ecosystem.
“If people are at the heart of climate action, it is impossible for engineers or natural scientists alone to understand and address climate change.

“All disciplines need to work together – especially the range of social sciences including political science, sociology, geography and psychology – to find solutions to wider societal goals.”
