Physicians Adopt Digital Technology – Healthcare Economist

One AMA report of the month Survey physicians’ perceptions of digital health. This year’s survey repeats similar surveys in 2016 and 2019. Some of the key findings include:

  • There has been an increase in the percentage of physicians who see advantages in leveraging digital health solutions. The percentage of physicians who believe digital health tools are advantageous for patient care increased from 85% in 2016 to 93% in 2022, and growth was measured for all physicians regardless of age or specialty.
  • The adoption of digital tools has grown significantly across all physicians, regardless of gender, specialty or age. The average number of digital health tools used by doctors will increase from 2.2 in 2016 to 3.8 in 2022.
  • Improving clinical outcomes and productivity is the number one factor influencing physician interest in digital health tools. The ability to help reduce stress and burnout is also increasingly important as a key driver of digital tool adoption. Areas of responsibility remain the most important requirement for physicians to adopt digital health tools, followed by integration with their EHR and guaranteeing data privacy.
  • The biggest growth in adoption is in digital health tools that facilitate remote care. The percentage of physicians using remote/virtual visits will increase from 14% in 2016 to 80% in 2022, while the percentage of physicians using remote monitoring devices will increase from 12% in 2016 to 30% in 2022.
  • The most popular digital health tool for physicians is remote access (57%), followed by remote monitoring devices (53%).
  • Intent for future adoption of emerging technologies is high, but current usage is low.
  • Two in five physicians plan to adopt augmented intelligence in the next year, and nearly one in five are currently using augmented intelligence in their practice. While the current use of digital therapeutics is low, they have the highest combined proportions in future plans.
