According to reports, the Xi’an H-6J strategic bomber of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Naval Air Force (PLANAF) conducted naval mine-laying and air-to-ground attack exercises as part of the live fire exercises in the South China Sea.

According to a video released by CCTV on December 3, multiple H-6J bombers were deployed at night and flew to the South China Sea training area at dawn. The bombers subsequently carried out aerial mine-laying and bomb attacks on targets located on unknown islands and coral reefs.

It is understood that the H-6J aircraft participating in the exercise was assigned to the PLA Southern Theater Command. The CCTV report also noted that the bombers carried out two bombings and carried out refueling and refueling at Guiping Mengshu Air Force Base on the inland of the South China Sea on Hainan Island in southern China, and showed that at least one bomber was equipped with YJ-12 except for the interior In addition to the installed mines and bombs, there are also supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles.

“We have effectively tested the accuracy and reliability of the two types of ammunition. In the next step, we will combine the actual situation of the enemy, innovate in tactics and methods, and make breakthroughs in the use of new weapons and equipment.” China’s “Global Times” say.

Xi’an H-6J is the latest variant in the H-6 series and is replacing the aging H-6G. Newer models can carry up to six off-zone land attack and anti-ship cruise missiles, such as Y-12J and YJ-83K anti-ship missiles, on their underwing pylons. It is also equipped with two wing electronic countermeasures (ECM) pods for electronic self-defense.

Although the H-6J’s main combat area appears to be the South China Sea, it is expected that in the event of a conflict in Taiwan, the H-6J will also be deployed to support the H-6K bomber Strait operated by the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF).
